Tech Nuggets
14.05.2021 VW ID.3 Touch-safe Busbar Mounting
The busbar mountings inside the HV battery provide us with interesting insights.
15.04.2021 VW ID.3 HV Battery Module
During the teardown study, we gathered interesting insights into the system architecture and the applied technologies, including the highly standardized MEB battery module.
05.03.2021 VW ID.3 Active Roller Blind
Another interesting insight is the active roller blind in the vehicle front-end. It is located between radiator and AC condenser. Closing the blind reduces air resistance and thus lowers energy consumption.
19.02.2021 VW ID.3 Drum Brake
The use of drum brakes on the rear axle is an interesting insight provided by benchmarking. Drum brakes offer cost and weight advantages compared to disc brakes. The integration of the electromechanically actuated park brake is also an interesting feature.
04.02.2021 VW ID.3 Inverter Cooling
Also worth mentioning is the inverter and it's cooling solution. The Infineon IGBT modules are placed on a cooling plate with pin fin heatsinks. The coolant flows from the on-board charger through the inverter housing and the cooling plate to the electric motor.
19.01.2021 VW ID.3 AC Circuit
An interesting example is the AC circuit. With optional heat pump and CO2 refrigerant, different operating modes are possible, so the efficiency can be increased.
17.12.2020 VW ID.3 HV Battery Connector
The HV battery connector provides more interesting insights. The highly integrated design covering multiple functions is a cost efficient solution.
03.12.2020 VW ID.3 Gearbox
An interesting insight into the system architecture and the applied technologies is provided by the gearbox design within the electric drive unit. The semi-integrated approach and the missing park lock indicate a lean and cost efficient design.
19.11.2020 VW ID.3 On-board charger
During the teardown study interesting insights on system architecture and applied technologies are captured. One exemplary cost effective design solution is the fixation of the on-board charger cover, which is welded to the housing. This saves bolts, a gasket and assembly effort. On the other hand this approach implicates that in case of a defect, the entire on-board charger needs to be exchanged.
As a basis for the development of new HMI systems, it is essential to understand the strengths and weaknesses of the existing solutions in terms of usability and user experience. For the evaluation of these systems, fka takes advantage of a wide range of different methods and tools.
