Road Texture Analysis
Since the tire is the only connection between vehicle and road, it is fundamental to consider the road surface characteristics in vehicle and tire simulations. That is why fka investigates the effects of road texture on the friction behavior for passenger car tires. With our extensive testing infrastructure we were already able to compare tire measurements under different surfaces. While the indoor tire test rig´s roadway replacements are usually covered by corundum sandpaper, outdoor testing takes place on real roads. For more realistic tire measurements under stable conditions, one has to bring the road into the lab.
Therefore a contactless mobile texture measurement system was developed to obtain micro- and macrotexture properties of surfaces used for indoor and outdoor tire testing. The spatial and vertical resolution of the system was sufficient to measure surface textures of both sandpaper P120 and asphalt roads.
Based on this system, we were able to obtain not only road surface characteristics, but could also create 3D printed road surface models to investigate surface roughness effects on friction characteristics of tire rubber compounds. We are currently working on bringing the road surface on our tire test rigs. The aim of our work in road texture analysis is to get a better understanding of the road texture as an influencing factor and enhance the friction characteristics on tire model simulations.
