Life cycle analysis (LCA) as a strategic decision tool: The E₂P approach

Increasing the efficiency over the life cycle and the decarburization of all processes are important goals in the development of current and future mobility concepts. In addition to the efforts to reduce CO2 emissions during driving, vehicle manufacturers want to set new sustainability standards along the entire value chain, especially in the production of new vehicles and recycling.

Background

Innovations and new technologies are thus in the tension triangle of optimizing technological performance, costs and life cycle emissions. The integration of sustainability aspects in the development but also in the awarding processes for relevant suppliers requires the integration of a life cycle analysis (LCA) at an early stage in the technology development process - for OEMs as well as for suppliers

The increasing number of possible technology applications in conventionally powered as well as electrified vehicles thus requires an early assessment of the potential of innovations along the entire value chain against the background of constantly shortened development cycles.

Our approach

With the E2P approach, fka has developed a holistic potential assessment at the overall vehicle, system and component level. In addition to performance, the assessment of potential also includes economic aspects (e. g. costs) and, in particular, a holistic view of the innovation over the entire life cycle (ecology) in the analysis. In a typical project, we carry out the following steps together with the customer:

  1. Environmental analysis
    • Analysis of the decision environment
    • Definition of the specific OEM or end customer requirements
  2. KPI analysis
    • Identification of performance indicators
    • Systematic determination of a weighting
  3. Holistic technology analysis
    • Life cycle analysis (LCA)
    • Economic analysis
    • Quantification of the technological performance
  4. E2P analysis
    • Calculation of indicator values
    • Transparent comparison of all weighted performance indicators in a two-dimensional portfolio representation (E2P)
  5. Strategy
    • Development of a technology strategy
    • Strategic recommendations for action (organizational, R&D, communication…)

Advantages

The life cycle analysis covers the entire product life cycle, including the extraction and production of resources, energy generation, material production and use and end-of-life phase. This very time-consuming process is usually in conflict with the need for an assessment of potential in an early phase of development. For this reason, fka offers not only a detailed LCA in the E2P approach but also an efficient, tailored life cycle analysis as a valid basis for decision-making.

The E2P approach as a holistic potential assessment offers you a method for strategic technology decisions but also a transparent marketing instrument for all players within the value chain.

In combination with fka's consulting services in the field of CO2 and emissions strategies, client-side technology strategies can be optimized by means of the holistic potential assessment using the E2P approach.
