Thermal Management

The electrification of vehicles creates new challenges for optimizing the thermal management both for drivetrain components and interior temperature control as well as for the complete vehicle itself. With our thorough understanding of components we analyze the vehicle as a complete thermodynamic system while considering human comfort requirements.

Energy and Thermal Management Strategies

Effective and efficient management of energy flows - for both conventional and electrified vehicles, this is the central component for minimizing the consumption of resources.

E-Mobility and more complex hybrid or fuel cell drives place new and diverse demands on energy and thermal management. The interaction of the energy sources available on board should be optimally adapted to the driving task. If the combustion engine is absent or switched off, the potential of usable waste heat decreases while at the same time comfort requirements increase. In addition, electrified drives have a significantly higher number of temperature-sensitive components.

Our solution to this challenge: Intelligent energy management strategies that are tailored to the drive system and the application, taking into account not only energy efficiency but also other target variables such as driveability, emission behavior or battery life.

This will enable us to achieve the following objectives, among others:

  • Reduction of the total energy demand, e.g. by using waste heat
  • Improved efficiency and service life through operation in the optimum temperature range
  • Reduction of costs in customer operations using a demand-oriented operating strategy

We support you in the entire development process from the early concept phase, for example in the simulative evaluation of various drive concepts, which only develop their full potential with the right energy management, to the commissioning of the energy management in the test vehicle using rapid control prototyping tools such as the dSpace Autobox.

Depending on the application, legally prescribed standard tests (such as WLTP, EPA Federal Test Procedure) or individually developed methods for determining real consumption are used to evaluate the results.

Due to numerous overlaps and synergies, we use the interdisciplinary competencies of our Drive & Thermal Management and Electrical & Electronics divisions to achieve optimum results.
